Veterinarian - Medical Director - Owner

Dr. Hinkle is a 1990 graduate of Colorado State University. She has been practicing in Sonoma County for over 25 years, founding "The Animal Hospital of Cotati" in 1998. She says that the seed of being a veterinarian was planted early in life, and then reinforced with a position working in New Mexico during high school with a veterinarian specializing in wild animal rescue.

She comes from a science background, with her parents holding multiple degrees in computing and physics, which provided her with a wonderful background to approach veterinary medicine with an integrated approach, offering bioresonance. She lives in Petaluma with her husband Carlton, their family dog, Jaxx and their adventurous cat, Spencer.

Senior Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Leavey is a 1993 graduate of the University of California at Davis. She has practiced in Northern California for over 21 years. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Leavey worked for the National Parks Service. It was that stewardship of wildlife that sparked her interest in veterinary medicine. Mary Ellen is very happy to have found a home at Animal Hospital of Cotati 20 years ago.

If she had to pick her favorite aspect of being a veterinarian, it would be the personal relationships she develops with the owners and animals with whom she has the privilege to work. She lives in Petaluma with her two dogs, Farley and Macy, and her husband, Greg.

Veterinarian -  Acupuncturist

Dr. Adams is a 1995 graduate of the University of California at Davis. She has practiced in Northern California for over 20 years. She lives in Sebastopol with her dog, three cats, two horses and her husband, Ken.

Dr. Adams is a Certified Veterinarian and Acupuncturist. She loves to be able to provide clients with the option of integrated medical treatments. She collaborates actively with our "Western" medicine doctors while offering the "Alternative" therapeutic benefits of Acupuncture. 



Dr. Jill Mercado

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Jill Mercado is a 2005 graduate of the University of California at Davis and has been practicing for ten years. She lives in Glen Ellen with her two dogs, one cat, one turtle, one rabbit, and her husband, Daniel.

Jill found a home at Animal Hospital of Cotati over 9 years ago. The part of veterinary medicine that she loves the most is being able to truly help the animals she treats and seeing an improvement in quality of life for everyone.

Client Communication Coordinator

Barbara comes to us from the "human" side of medicine. She graduated from Empire college with a degree and certification in Medical Assisting in 1997. She's been with us since 2009 and has loved working with animals.

Barbara has two cats, Steve and Little Man who sometimes drive her crazy, but also love her very much. Barbara's favorite pet is a gray short-hair husband named "Jeff". During her free time you might find her spending time with her grandsons Sebastian and Levi, or you just might find her making noise on the streets on her Harley as this lady is no typical grandma.



Veterinary Technician Assistant

Tawny was born in San Rafael, and raised right here is Rohnert Park. She comes to us from a mostly large animal background, since she grew up on a dressage horse ranch and has had a love for horses (and other animals too!) since she could walk. She is currently enrolled at the Santa Rosa Junior College in hopes of receiving her certification in the Veterinary Technicians program. 

Her favorite part about her job is applying what she learns in school to the work she does here in the hospital. In her free time, Tawny loves to read and spend time with her dog, Skypp and her horse, Simba. 



Joelle joined the Animal Hospital of Cotati family in March of 2017. Prior to working with us, she worked as a certified medical assistant and as a receptionist at another veterinary hospital. Joelle is the mom to three children; Brody, Nick, and Lily, and their sweet cat Ivan. 

Joelle's favorite part of working in the Veterinary field is seeing the bond between owners and their pets! She also enjoys having the privilege of working with and comforting owners through tough situations. We are so thankful to have Joelle as a part of our team!




Betty joined our team in October of 2018. She previously worked for Redwood Credit Union with Account Services. She is happy to be able to work at a desk where she can hand out treats to dogs all day! Her favorite part of work has been meeting and cuddling with all the puppies and watching them grow up! Betty has a cat named Merle a chihuahua terrier named Ukon, who also loves that Betty has become such a professional at handing out dog treats! 


Registered Veterinary Technician

It is our pleasure to have the personality and skills of Cathy as part of the Animal Hospital of Cotati Family.  Cathy has an extensive educational background including a BA in Biology as well as being a CLS (Clinical Lab Scientist). She applied those skills in the human medical industry for years. Cathy has been working with animals for the last nine years and has been with us for the past four years.

Cathy's love for animals and her desire to apply her education in their benefit brought her to our hospital.  Cathy is married with two children, and enjoys spending time outside hiking and gardening.



      Registered Veterinary Technician       

Liz has worked in the veterinary industry since 2008.  If she had to pick her favorite aspect of being a technician, it would be providing nursing care for hospitalized patients. Liz has a BA in Anthropology from UC Berkeley. 

In the past five years Liz has participated in humanitarian efforts in Peru, Guatemala, and Paraguay. She is a member of the "World Vets International Aid for Animals," whose mission is to provide veterinary aid in developing countries and veterinary disaster relief worldwide. In her free time she enjoys hiking and spending time with her family.


Registered Veterinary Technician       


 Jennifer has worked in the veterinary industry since 2011. Her experience included three years working at the local animal shelter. Jen received her AA degree from Santa Rosa Junior college in 2014 and has Recently become a Registered Veterinary Technician!

 In her free time, Jen is in a competitive bowling league. She also loves to snowboard and reading science fiction mystery novels. She lives in Santa Rosa with her corgi mix, Harley.


Registered Veterinary Technician 

Karissa comes to us from a shelter medicine background.  In addition to her AA in environmental studies, Karissa has recently become a Registered Veterinary Technician! Her favorite aspect of veterinary medicine is orthopedics and rehabilitation.

Karissa was born & raised in Rohnert Park but now resides in Santa Rosa with her boyfriend and their two kittens, Remus and Padfoot!  When she is not caring for AHOC patients or her own she enjoys hiking, traveling, and volunteering time for her local shelter.


Veterinary Technician

Camry comes to us from a background in 4H and has a lot of experience raising farm animals. She is currently studying for her  Registered Veterinary Technician boards. Her favorite aspect of working in the veterinary field is practicing emergency medicine and running anesthesia for surgeries and procedures.

A fun fact about Camry is that she loves road trips, archery, and visiting with friends. She currently lives in Solano County with her fiancé and their two cats, Sasha and Gypsy.

Veterinary Technician Assistant

Alex joined the Animal Hospital of Cotati in September 2017. She previously spent time volunteering with the Napa Animal Shelter and is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Biology. On her "free time" she likes photography, art projects, and hanging with her three pups! Alex has two American Staffordshire Terriers and a German Sheppard who keep her on her toes, especially when it comes to their heart conditions! 

At work, Alex loves studying cytology and looking under the microscope. She also enjoys being able to work with some of our more behaviorally challenged cats and dogs we see. 


Veterinary Technician Assistant

Sarah was born and raised in San Jose and attended Santa Clara University where she earned degrees in Anthropology and Environmental Science. She worked for an archeology lab and later changed fields to work as a realtor. Sarah changed fields again fall of 2017 when she started taking RVT classes at SRJC and joined the AHOC team.

​Sarah lives with her husband Tim and their cats Dojo, Gizmo, Gadget, and Daytona and their Beautiful Great Dane mix, Denali! Her favorite part of working at AHOC is snuggling all the dogs and of course, being able to make a difference in animal's lives.

​Ashley joined our team in June 2018 and comes from a broad animal background. She has a degree in Animal Science and is working towards her RVT. Ashley also spends time working for the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter, where she recently adopted one of their "senior citizen" cats, Papi. She has another cat Lola, and a sweet pup, Baya who she enjoys taking on long walks! 

​Ashley enjoys all the cute dogs she gets to see everyday and the wonderful people she gets to work with! 


Veterinary Technician Assistant

Mari is Santa Rosa raised and attending SRJC working towards becoming an RVT. She joined our team in April 2018 and previously worked at the Sonoma Humane Society. She has two chihuahuas, Sophia and Wesley, and her newest addition, a rat terrier pup named Cali!

Mari loves being able to to make cats and dogs happy and enjoys procedures such as foxtail searches or rupturing cysts!

Samantha is a graduate of Sonoma State University and received a Bachelors Degree in Business Management. She recently graduated with an AA degree from Santa Rosa Junior college, as well.

Outside of work, Samantha enjoys cooking with her family and reading Science Fiction. She lives in Petaluma with her husband Walter, and her cat, Dazzle.

Hospital Manager - Owner

Carlton is a really great guy, but then he is also the one writing this.

Carlton is originally from Roswell New Mexico, and attended New Mexico State University where he received a BA in Marketing.

His most recent work experience outside the management of the hospital included 18 years working with a division of Ogilvy Advertising.  He lives in Petaluma with his beautiful wife Kathy and their lovable dog, Jaxx, and their mischievous cat, Spencer.
